ÁVILA


Ávila is situated in Castile y León.It is built on the summit of a rocky hill, infact Ávila has an extreme climate, with very hard and long winters, and short summers. In pre-Roman times (5th century BC), it was inhabited by the Vettones who called it “Obila”(High Mountain) and they had here one of their strongest fortresses.

avilaThe city lived a period of prosperity under the Catholic Kings and their successors, but decayed again starting from the 18th century.


This beautiful city is known for its medieval walls, all made in granite. The Gothic Cathedral is one of city's defences. It was built between the 12th and 14th centuries, and has the appearance of a fortress. It has got also two solid towers and contains a large number of sculptures and painting.


Ávila is a very suggestive city because all its streets and monument are full of history. The most important places to visit are:

  • The Gothic Monastery of San Tomás
  • The church of San Pedro
  • The curch of San Segundo
  • The church of San Vicente


The last three have got all Romanesque characteristic of the 12th century in their main features.

Yemas de Santa teresa Moreover, typical food in Ávila includes roast lamb, suckling pig, and veal steak. Ávila is also famous for its “Yemas de Santa Teresa”- egg yolk candies named after the patron saint.Santa Teresa yolks are sweet typical of the city, manufactured in the traditional pastry "La Flor de Castilla". Other characteristic dishes are “Beans Avila del Barco”and “Avila-bone steak”.
