CÁDIZ

cadizCádiz is a city in southwestern Spain and it is situated in Andalusia. This is a typically Andalusian city that has got a well-preserved historical landmarks. The older part of Cádiz is characterized by the antiquity of its various quarters. For this reason we can say that this is the most ancient city still standing in Western Europe.

Among the main places that a tourist can visit there are:

  • The Cathedral, which has got various architectural styles. It contains Baroque elements and was finally completed in neo-classical style. Its chapels has got many paintings and relics
  • Plaza de Mina, that is situated in the heart of this old city
  • Plaza de San Francisco, San Francisco Church and Convent
  • Plaza San Antonio, surrounded by a great number of neo-classical buildings. San Antonio Church is also situated in this square
  • Plaza de Candelaria, that is notable for a statue in its center of Emilio Castelar, president of the first spanish republic
  • Plaza de Falla and the Gran Teatro Falla
  • Plaza de España and the monument to the Constitution of 1812

Playa de la Caleta In Cádiz there are also a lot of beautiful beaches like the “Playa de la Caleta”, “Playa de la Victoria” and “Playa de Santa María del Mar”.

The most important holiday in Cádiz is the Carnival. It is one of the best known carnivals in the world. The central themes of this carnival are sharp criticisms of political nature; this carnival is famous for the satirical groups calles “chirigotas”, who perform comical music.

Concerning the gastronomy of Cádiz, it includes: “atún encebollado”, “tortillita de camarones” and “panizas”.
